Workshop on Enhancing Teachers’ Professionalism #March 2nd Edition

DEE UMS conducted a workshop to enhance teachers’ professionalism for the second period in this month. This workshop was held on Friday, March 26, 2021, and was participated by 30 English junior High school teacher in Surakarta, Indonesia. Titis Setyabudi M.A, an English lecturer of DEE, was the moderator of this event. He stated that that this event was one of the program of DEE UMS aimed to help English teacher to improve their understanding in some newest trend in English teaching and learning practice.

In this workshop, there were four lecturers of DEE UMS, delivering four different topics regarding the English teaching and learning practice. They were Dr Malikatul Laila, M.Hum, Yeni Prastiwi, Ph.D., Susiati, S.Pd., M.Ed., and Suharyanto, S.Pd., M.Ed.  This workshop was started by Dr. Malikatul Laila, M.Hum, who delivered the speech entitled “Strategy to Enhance Students’ Pronunciation”. Here, she mentioned that as an English teacher, we should be careful with our pronunciation inform of the students since we are their firs role model in forming their pronunciation style. We also need to consider various strategy in order to maintain the students to keep on focusing on their pronunciation.

The second presenter was Yeni Prastiwi, Ph.D who delivered the topics about some active learning strategy in English language classes. In her presentation, she mentioned some strategy that can be used by the teacher to improve students’ activeness in learning English. One of them is using role-play game which is quite effective for the students to get involve more in learning process.  Susiati, S,Pd., M.Ed, as the third presenter in this workshop, talked about English short stories that can be used as a media to build character education. There was some moral value that can be taken from the story and it will be a great thing to build students’ character.

The last presenter of this workshop was Suharyanto, S.Pd., M.Ed who delivered the presentation entitled “Teacher Feedback Practice in Teaching English as a Foreign Language”. In his presentation, he mentioned that giving feedback is one of the great challenges for the English teacher in this pandemic era since the teaching and learning process was conducted via online. Teachers must use various approach in providing effective feedback for the students.
