On June 19th 2021, Department of English Education held a workshop on enhancing teacher professionalism for Junior High school teacher in Surakarta. This workshop was conducted via online since it was still in pandemic situation. It was attended by more than 30 people, joining from many parts of Surakarta.
This workshop was supposed to help teacher to improve their understanding in teaching and learning English. This workshop was moderated by Suharyanto, M.Ed., a junior lecturer of English Education Department who graduated from Hiroshima University.
There were four speakers in this workshop and all of them are English lecturers from Department of English Education, Universitas Muhamadiyah Surakarta.
This event began with the first speaker, Hartati Widiastutu, M.Pd., who discussed about STEM/STEAM in English language Teaching. She introduced some beneficial features of STEM that can be applied in ELT, and expressed her hopes for the use of STEM in Junior high school English teaching and learning process for the future.
Next, Qanita Masykuroh, M.Hum., gave a presentation entitled “Revisiting Folktales as a Medium of Character Education.” She discussed the use of narrative text which is use in teaching English in Junior High School that could be the source of moral and character education for the students. There were many folktales in Indonesia and we must introduce them to our students.
The third speaker in this workshop was Sumayah, M.A, with his presentation entitled “Drama as Literary Approach to Improve Reading Skills for Students of the Junior High school in Pandemic Era.” In her presentation, she discussed more about the concept of narrative text and its components.
The last presenter on this workshop was Nur Hidayat, M.Pd., who is a senior lecturer from English Education Department, Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta. He gave the presentation entitled “Using Google for Searching Resource”. In his presentation he explained some tips in maximizing google as a search engine in this era.
